A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
